Google Talk

We installed Google Talk and like it. So far I have resisted installing any type of IM or instant messaging programme. I want something that is not loaded with unnecessary heft. This may be it. Lynette and I both installed it earlier this week and since our TC1100’s have built-in microphones and speakers, Google Talk worked without any tinkering the first time. We were happily surprised and a bit in awe.

There is a NYT article a few days ago by David Pogue discussing how Google’s Internet Messaging software is unique:

"Google Talk aims to end the ridiculous era of proprietary chat networks. At the moment, AOL, MSN and Yahoo each maintain separate, incompatible networks. The big boys each want to be alone in the sandbox, and the losers are their customers. Google Talk, however, is based on an open, published standard that the company is making available to all."

At the same time, all this new and free software is apparantly making some nervous. The article ends with:

"Trying to figure out what this company’s really up to is enough to drive you crazy."

While I am somewhat leery of Google’s increased dominance and observe in me that I do not like their excessive datamining, I have to admit that using Google software does make me feel good.

Rugged PCs

Friday, August 26th, 2005

I noticed some Panasonic ads touting its series of toughbook notebooks while reading the NYT online. These are not Tablets. Similar to the Lenova ads I discussed earlier on this page they show how major spills and falls with your toughbook notebook have happy endings. What will they think of in terms of anti-terrorism measures? http://www.panasonic.com/business/toughbook/home.asp

HP used to have a rugged tablet. What they show now on their website is a bit confusing. There is an HP model nr3610 rugged notebook. It states that it has the tablet pc windows xp version. However when you meander further and look at the specs there is no mention of tablet features. HP used to carry tough tablet pc’s. Where have they gone?

As an aside did you notice the weight of the HP rugged notebook? 8.23 lbs! I could never drop it because I couldn’t lift it high enough!

Going Mainstream?

Thursday, August 25th, 2005
Reading the Canadian Globe & Mail online edition I noticed an ad for the Lenova tablet. More and more we see ads for tablets. A couple of weeks ago the HP TC1100 was plastered all over the NYT.

Tablets are becoming slowly mainstream. I certainly hope so.

HP Repairs

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005

I received a call today from a research company calling on behalf of HP to gauge customer satisfaction around the return and repair of HP/Compaq products. I tend to hesitate and often say no when a research or polling company calls but HP is obviously different. Recently I had to send in my Tablet to HP because there were some problems. After calling tech support the box came the next day.

I called up Purolator and they picked up the box with the Tablet and it was returned to me after 2 business days in tip-top shape. Really, yes we do pay a premium for a 3 yr warranty and HP products in generally, but the service from HP makes it all worth it from my point of view. I answered the questions from the research company diligently and gave full kudos to HP in terms of customer satisfation. I did add that the hybrid Tablet model should be maintained.

What if?

By the way, what would decisions and the world look like if men were not ruling most of the world? You know, just asking.
